Osun State Mass Education Agency Bill Scales Second Reading


The Osun State House of  Assembly has progressed deliberations on the Osun State Mass Education Agency (OSMEA) Bill, 2024, which successfully passed its second reading.

Leading the debate, Chairman House Committee on Education, Hon. Sikiru Bajepade highlighted the bill’s policy thrust, emphasizing its focus on equipping learners with practical and vocational skills,
 reducing the state’s illiteracy rate, and serving as a source of enlightenment for youths. 

The proposed agency is also expected to regulate private remedial and training centres, requiring them to formally register as a means of improving standards and generating revenue.

Contributing to the debate,  lawmaker representing Ife-South state  constituency, Hon. Lawrence Adeoti, described the bill as a timely intervention, noting that proper registration of training centres would enhance accountability. 

The Majority Leader, Hon. Babajide Adewunmi  underscored the importance of regularizing continuous education centres, while representatives from Ife-Central, Hon. Abiola Awoyeye pointed out its potential to boost adult education, as age should not be a limiting factor to education.

Lawmakers representing Ede-South state constituency Hon. Taofeek Olayiwola, Ifon/Orolu, Hon. Adekunle Oladimeji, Olorunda, Hon. Olayide Ajibola, Oriade, Hon. Kanmi Ajibola alongside the Chief-Whip, Hon. Olawale Akerele also expressed strong support for the bill, stressing its necessity and potential impact on educational development across the state.

The Speaker of the House aligned with the general consensus, affirming the benefits of the proposed legislation. The motion for the bill’s second reading was subsequently seconded by Hon. Hafeez Abiodun.

The bill is expected to proceed to the next legislative stage for further scrutiny and consideration.
