Ramadan is not just about abstaining from food, drinks--Alh. Kolawole
The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Osun State Council, 2026 Ramadan Lecture, Alhaji Dr. Abdulfatai Adesina Kolawole, JP, has described Ramadan as a holistic period of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and heightened devotion, not merely abstaining from food and drinks.
Alhaji Kolawole who is also the Baba Adeen of Osun State made this known while addressing journalists and Muslim leaders at the Ramadan Lecture organized by the Osun NUJ.
Alhaji Kolawole said, Ramadan focuses on purifying the soul by curbing negative behaviors like anger, backbiting, and greed, while strengthening one's connection with Allah through increased prayer, charity, and patience.
The Muslim leader who was speaking on the theme of this year’s lecture, “Islam, Ramadan and Refinement of Character” said, Islam places great emphasis on good character saying, "Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “The best among you are those who have the best manners and character” Therefore, Ramadan teaches us patience, humility, kindness, generosity and empathy for the less privileged. These virtues should not end with the fasting period; rather, they should become the foundation upon which we build our daily lives and interactions.
"As Journalists, members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists play a critical role in shipping public discourse, promoting truth, fairness and accountability in society.
"The refinement of character that Ramadan teaches is equally essential in the noble profession of journalism. Ethical reporting, integrity, responsibility and commitment to truth are virtues that align strongly with the moral teachings of Islam and indeed all great religions.
"At a time when many parts of the world are witnessing conflict and instability, we must use this sacred period to pray fervently for global peace and stability, particularly in the Middle East. We pray that Almighty Allah grants wisdom, restraint and reconciliation to leaders and nations, especially in regions experiencing tension such as Iran, Israel, the Gulf nations, and the blessed land of Saudi Arabia. May Allah soften hearts, restore dialogue among nations and bring lasting peace to the world.
"Indeed, Islam is a religion of peace, justice and mercy. The message of Ramadan is universal, calling on humanity to rise above hatred, injustice and division, and to embrace compassion, forgiveness and unity.
"I must also commend the organizing committee for their dedication and commitment to making this programme a success. Ramadan lecture such as this provide a valuable platform for enlightenment, spiritual growth and societal reflection", Alhaji Kolawole concluded.
