Osun Govt commends NEMA for relief support to Atakumosa market fire victims

The Osun State Government has commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for providing relief materials to victims of the recent fire disaster at Atakunmosa Market in Ilesa West Local Government Area of Osun State.
The fire incident, which occurred late last year, destroyed several shops and caused significant losses to traders in the market.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Emergency Management, Hon. Emiola Fakeye, expressed appreciation to NEMA for its prompt intervention and consistent support to the state during emergencies beyond its immediate capacity.
The event, held at the Atakunmosa Market Town Hall in Ilesa, saw the distribution of food and other relief items, including rice, beans, spaghetti, tomato paste, groundnut oil, and cement, nails to affected traders.
Hon. Fakeye urged the beneficiaries to remain supportive of the present administration, noting that Governor Adeleke has delivered significantly on infrastructures and remains committed to doing more for the people of the state.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Ibukun Fadipe, appreciated NEMA for its collaboration and called for sustained partnership in disaster management. He advised market women to take precautionary measures, especially by switching off electrical appliances when closing their shops, stressing that prevention is always better than cure.
In his remarks, the Director-General of National Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, represented by the Head of Operations, Ibadan Office, Mr. Kadiri Olarewaju, urged beneficiaries to strengthen local response mechanisms. He noted that no amount of relief materials can fully compensate for losses incurred during disasters and advocated for the establishment of Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) to enhance disaster prevention, mitigation, and response at the grassroots level.
Earlier in her welcome address, the General Manager of the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA), Barrister Olubukola Aderibigbe, thanked NEMA for its timely intervention and encouraged traders to remain disaster-conscious by adopting effective preventive measures.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Market Secretary, Pastor Amos Fadare expressed gratitude to both NEMA and the Osun State Government for their swift response and pledged that the relief items would be judiciously utilized.
Dignitaries present at the event included the Chairman of Ilesa West Local Government, Hon. Adebanjo Oladiti; representatives of relevant state agencies; market leaders including the Iyaloja and Babaloja; and officials of NEMA and OSEMA, among others.
