Osun Govt Inaugurates Integrated Health Supply Steering Committee to Boost Drugs Availability
By Segilola Babalola
The Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke has inaugurated the State Integrated and Sustainable Health Supply System Steering Committee to ensure the availability of quality drugs in government-owned health facilities at uniform and affordable prices.
The Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Barrister Jola Akintola, made this known during the inauguration ceremony held at his office.
The Commissioner explained that a sister agency in the health sector was established in 2024 following the passage of an enabling law by the Osun State House of Assembly. He noted that the agency’s management team was constituted in February 2025.
He identified the new body as the Osun State Drugs and Medical Supplies Management Agency (OSUN-DMA), mandated to guarantee the availability of quality drugs and medical supplies across public health facilities at standardized and affordable rates.
According to the Commissioner, the need for the agency became evident after deliberations at the National Council on Health, where states with functional drug management agencies were distinguished from those without. Upon returning from the meeting, Osun State moved swiftly to establish the agency as part of the administration’s long-term health sector reforms.
He added that inaugurating the committee aligns with national operational guidelines and standards of practice designed to strengthen institutional structures and ensure the sustainability of the agency.
The Commissioner urged committee members to approach their responsibilities with diligence, emphasizing that their work would directly impact drug availability in public health institutions.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Isiaka Adekunle, charged members to begin work immediately to fulfill their mandate.
In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of OSUN-DMA, Dr.Saheed Adewale Olarewaju, described the inauguration as a major step toward strengthening the agency’s institutional framework, particularly in monitoring, evaluation, and oversight.
Delivering the vote of thanks, the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Ministry of Health, Pharmacist Sauli Razak, appreciated the Governor, Commissioner for Health, and Permanent Secretary for creating an enabling environment that facilitated the establishment of the agency’s governance framework.
He noted that the inauguration completes the governance structure required for the smooth operation of OSUN-DMA and encouraged the committee to begin meetings promptly and submit reports to the steering committee.
