Adeleke Orders Immediate Cleanup of Ikirun Palace Amid Prolonged Kingship Crisis
Sunday Okunade
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has ordered the immediate cleaning and clearing of the Ikirun Palace, which has been overtaken by bushes following the prolonged kingship crisis in the town.
The governor expressed strong displeasure over the neglected condition of the palace, describing it as unacceptable for such a revered cultural and historical symbol of Ikirun land.
Governor Adeleke made the declaration during a condolence visit to Ikirun, where he sympathised with families of prominent sons of the town who recently passed away.
Among the families visited were those of Prince Ismail Adeyemi, Asiwaju Gasali Lawal, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, and the Chief Imam of Ikirun land, Sheikh Yunus Ibrahim.
The governor noted that the abandoned state of the palace was a direct consequence of the lingering kingship dispute, which has hindered proper administration and maintenance of the royal institution.
He assured residents that the state government would take immediate steps to restore the palace environment, pending a lasting resolution of the kingship matter.
Governor Adeleke also urged community leaders and stakeholders in Ikirun to continue to uphold peace and unity, stressing that dialogue remains the most effective means of resolving the crisis.
Speaking on behalf of one of the bereaved families, Mr Abbas Adeyemi appreciated the governor and members of his executive council for the condolence visit, commending the administration’s achievements despite the withholding of local government allocations by the Federal Government. He offered prayers for the success of Governor Adeleke’s tenure and expressed confidence in his ability to complete two terms in office.
Also speaking, the Eesa of Ikirun land, Chief Lawal Adetoyese, praised the governor for infrastructural development in the town and pledged the support of the people of Ikirun for his second-term bid, while appealing to the state government to help resolve the kingship tussle and ensure the clearing of the overgrown palace.
