Osun Govt calls for collective action on violence against women, girls

Osun State government through the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and Social Welfare, has charged all to become ambassadors of change in preventing violence against women and girls. 


The charge was made by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon (Mrs) Ayobola Awolowo during a lecture  organized by the Ministry to commemorate 16 Days Activism Against Gender-Based Violence which held  at Christ African Church Grammar School, Osogbo.

The theme "End Digital Violence against Women and Girls," aims to stop digital violence such as bullying, stalking, harassing, insulting and embarrassing individuals on social media. 

Mrs. Awolowo urged the students to speak up when bullied or assaulted, report perpetrators, and seek help when necessary to prevent crimes against women and girls.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Abimbola Babatunde, highlighted the alarming rate of rape among young people, emphasizing that it is punishable by life imprisonment or even death, if a physically challenged person is raped. She also discussed the issue of female genital mutilation (FGM), noting that it is an offense under the Violence Against Person Prohibition (VAPP) Law .
Also, the Director, Gender Affairs of the Ministry, Ms. Lola Adewale, explained that bullying is the use of power to hurt another person, and when it happens online, it becomes digital bullying. 

She identified various types of bullying to  include  physical, verbal, and cyberbullying, just as she noted that victims may also experience mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

In her vote of thanks, the Principal of the school, Mrs. Abijoroh Atirene, expressed gratitude to the Ministry for the enlightenment program.
