NULGE President warns of breakdown of law and order over Osun LG crises
...... Urges Security Agencies to Act
The President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Osun State chapter, Comrade Kehinde Nathaniel Ogungbangbe, has warned that the leadership of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state should be held responsible should there be any breakdown of law and order in local councils across Osun State.
Ogungbangbe, in a rejoinder issued on behalf of Osun State NULGE, expressed shock and dismay over a press statement credited to Mr. Abiodun Idowu, who claims to be the Chairman of ALGON in the state, following NULGE’s notice of resumption to work.
While stating that NULGE was not contesting Idowu’s claim to ALGON chairmanship, the NULGE President described the allegations against the union as spurious, stressing that the union’s primary responsibility has always been the protection of the welfare and interests of its members.
He explained that NULGE workers had stayed away from local government secretariats since February due to the lingering local government crisis, noting that the union believes the impasse should be resolved strictly through constitutional and legal means.
The NULGE President, however, condemned what he described as the forceful and illegal occupation of council secretariats by the Idowu-led ALGON, insisting that such actions were contrary to the dictates of the law governing the ongoing local government imbroglio in the state.
Ogungbangbe maintained that the tenure of the affected council chairmen and councillors expired in October 2025, adding that their admission of this fact was evident in their decision to approach the Federal High Court seeking tenure elongation.
He argued that there is no subsisting court order or interim injunction empowering the former council officials to remain in office, warning that mere filing of a case does not confer legitimacy or automatic victory on any party.
The NULGE President called on Abiodun Idowu and his team to return to court and allow for the expeditious determination of their suit, stressing that only a clear pronouncement by a court of competent jurisdiction can constitutionally restore them to the council secretariats.
Ogungbangbe urged security agencies, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to prevail on the ALGON leadership to avoid actions capable of breaching public peace, while directing NULGE members to resume duties on Monday, January 5, 2026, and remain calm, law-abiding, and report any provocation to law enforcement authorities.
