Adeleke Reaffirms Commitment to Ending Malnutrition Among Mothers, Children in Osun
Sunday Okunade
The Osun State Government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke has reiterated its strong commitment to eradicating malnutrition among nursing mothers and children, as part of efforts to ensure a healthier population across the state.
This assurance was given by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, Hon. Eniola Odeniyi, during a one-day public enlightenment programme on breastfeeding and nutrition awareness for mothers and caregivers in Osun State.
The programme, organised by the Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment, was held at the ministry’s conference hall within the State Secretariat, Abere, and drew participants from different parts of the state.
Hon. Odeniyi highlighted the deliberate policies and interventions of the Adeleke administration aimed at improving maternal and child health, stressing that the wellbeing of mothers and children remains a top priority of the government.
He encouraged nursing mothers to practise exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child’s life, noting that proper nutrition at the early stage of life is critical to healthy growth and development. According to him, “a healthy child is a healthy nation.”
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Planning, Budget and Development, Mrs Yetunde Esan, outlined several benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, including improved brain development, protection from illnesses, warmth for the baby, stronger bonding between mother and child, and reduced financial burden on families.
Mrs Esan, who was represented by Mr Dauda Iyanda, also listed benefits of exclusive breastfeeding to mothers, such as faster recovery after childbirth, natural child spacing, and reduced risk of breast cancer. She further urged mothers to maintain a balanced diet to keep themselves healthy and support their babies’ growth.
In his lecture, a Principal Nutrition Officer, Mr Akeem Shutti, emphasized the importance of the first one thousand days of a child’s life, describing it as a crucial period that has lasting effects on physical and mental development. He also advised mothers to maintain proper personal hygiene and prepare food in clean environments.
The nutrition expert further encouraged families to embrace home gardening, explaining that it provides easy access to fresh and nutritious food at a low cost, thereby supporting healthy living and the fight against malnutrition in households.
