Osun State witnessed a historic milestone as its Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Sunday Femi Oroniyi, was formally decorated as a Global Ambassador by the United Nations World Congress of Diplomats (UN-WCD), becoming the first Osun indigene to receive the prestigious honour.
The colourful investiture ceremony, held at Akure, the capital of Ondo State, attracted top government officials, diplomatic envoys and national leaders, all gathered to celebrate a public servant whose work continues to drive impactful development across Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the UN-WCD Southwest Zonal Representative, Dr. Olabode Olawoye, extolled Oroniyi’s leadership credentials, describing him as a visionary who has consistently championed humanitarian service, integrity and excellence in governance.
In his acceptance remarks, Amb. Oroniyi said the recognition represents a renewed global mandate for greater service to humanity, stating that the award is a call to advance peacebuilding, sustainability and diplomatic collaboration.
He further stressed the global importance of Osun State’s achievements in water governance and environmental sustainability, noting that water security, environmental sustainability and economic development are diplomatic imperatives. He added that the honour strengthens his resolve to align local policies with international best practices for the benefit of the people.
Amb. Oroniyi expressed deep appreciation to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, for his transformational leadership in the water sector. He affirmed that the administration’s commitment to reviving moribund water schemes and expanding potable water access has delivered tangible progress that enhances the daily lives of citizens.
Goodwill messages poured in from Hon. Lanre Odelade (Special Adviser, RUWESA), Hon. Adesoye Oyetunde (Osun West Senatorial Leader), Hon. Sam Oyedotun (Board Chairman, Water Corporation) and Rev. Dr. Olufemi Oladejo, who each described Oroniyi as a pride of Osun and a shining example of service-driven leadership.
The presentation of a diplomatic passport and ambassadorial insignia sealed his formal induction into the global circle of UN-recognized diplomats, a proud moment that elevates Osun State’s profile on the world stage.
