Osun Govt reaffirms commitment to Science-driven development
The Osun State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to leveraging on science, technology, and innovation to drive sustainable development for the state and it's citizens.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Innovation, Science, Technology, and Digital Economy, Hon. Azeez Badmus,made this disclosure during the celebration of this year’s World Science Day for Peace and Development.
Hon. Badmus stated that the government is determined to unite science with humanity through innovation and transformation to empower society for responsible growth.
According to him, as global societies continue to rely on science for peace and progress, Osun State remains at the forefront of harnessing scientific advancements to enhance development in line with the theme of the celebration, “Trust, Transformation, and Tomorrow: The Science We Need for 2050.”
“One of our key focuses is to regulate the power of Artificial Intelligence and ensure that data generated and shared is well protected,” Hon. Badmus added.
In his lecture, the guest speaker, Dr. Sam Anih,an Assistant Director, African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education, emphasized that the fusion of science and AI has created innovative solutions to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.
“Globally, competition is fierce, data is now the new oil. Nations without natural resources are leveraging on data to build their economies,” Dr. Anih said.
The guest speaker commended Osun State Government for its proactive approach in science, technology, and AI.
Also speaking, Mr. Adegoke Johnson, Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics at the Ministry of Environment, described science as the foundation and backbone of all development.
He noted that the application of science enhances efficiency in all sectors, especially in agriculture, where it improves productivity, crop yield, and animal health.
The event also featured an essay competition among secondary schools, aimed at inspiring young minds toward scientific innovation. Iyanuoluwa Olaitan of Adejumo Grammar School, Owode-Ede, emerged as the overall winner, while other participants received certificates and cash prizes.
