Victims of Iwo Flood Disaster Seeks State, FG Assistance

By Segilola Babalola
The  Victims of the recent flood disaster in Iwo Local Government Area of Osun State have appealed to both the state and federal governments for urgent assistance, following the destruction of homes, businesses, and farmlands worth millions of naira.

The disaster, which struck on Friday, September 12, after hours of torrential rainfall, forced the Iyanifa River to overflow its banks, submerging residential buildings, shops, and farms in Ike-Oluwa, Yidi-Oba, Ponyan, and Kuti communities.

No fewer than 2,000 residents were displaced, with over 100 houses and shops damaged.

Reports also revealed that about 90 fish farms, poultry farms, and farmlands were destroyed, leaving victims counting heavy losses. While no lives were lost, many families have been forced to take shelter with relatives or spend huge sum of money repairing their damaged homes.

It could be recalled that the state government apparatus had earlier visited the scene to sympathize with the victims and promised immediate government intervention.

As a fallout to Osun State government visitation and proactive steps, the team from the Ibadan Operation Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA) also visited the affected communities to evaluate the extent of the damage.

Speaking during the visit, the Head of NEMA’s Ibadan Office, Mr. Kadiri Olanrewaju, sympathized with the victims and warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways, stressing that blocked drainage channels often worsen the impact of flooding.

Similarly, the General Manager of OSEMA, Mr. Abiola Oni, commiserated with affected residents and urged them to submit formal reports, supported with photographic evidence of destruction, to enable prompt government intervention.

Community leaders, however, expressed concern over the recurring nature of flooding in Iwo by calling on both NEMA and the Osun State Government to provide immediate relief materials and put in place long-term flood control measures to prevent a repeat of such devastation.
