Osun Governor Alerts Otan-Ayegbaju, Iragbiji Residents Over Impending Flood Risk

The Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has issued a strong flood alert to residents of Otan-Ayegbaju and Iragbiji, following a recent forecast by the Federal Ministry of Environment's Department of Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management. The advisory, dated July 31, 2025, warns of potential flooding due to heavy rainfall expected between July 31 and August 4, 2025.

In a press briefing held in her office, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Emergency Management, Hon. Emiola Fakeye, conveyed the governor’s concern and urged residents in flood-prone zones to evacuate or take all necessary precautions to ensure safety.

She further highlighted that the state government has proactively embarked on desilting and clearing of rivers and waterways to reduce the impact of potential floods.

"The safety of our people remains a top priority for Governor Adeleke. He is deeply concerned about the risk of flooding and is committed to ensuring that no lives are lost. We urge residents to heed the warnings and stay alert. Prevention is better than cure,” she added.

Also speaking at the briefing, General Manager of the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA), Mr. Abiola Oni, stressed the importance of public cooperation in keeping drainage systems clean and functional.

He noted that Osun Government will continue to prioritize public safety, calling for community vigilance and collaboration in the face of environmental threats. The GM further advised residents of the flood prone areas to stay informed, comply with safety directives, and report emergency situations promptly.

"We must all play our part. If we block the drainages, the water will have no place to go. I urge all citizens to stop the indiscriminate dumping of waste in waterways", he warned.
