2025 World Breastfeeding Week: Osun Govt Reiterates Commitment to Child Health

As part of activities marking the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week, the Osun State Government, through the Ministry of Information and Public Enlightenment, has emphasized the vital role of breastfeeding in child development and maternal health.

Speaking at the event held at the Ministry’s conference hall,  Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, urged mothers across the state to embrace the culture of exclusive breastfeeding, describing it as crucial to the healthy growth and development of children.

Alimi stressed that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke, prioritizes public health enlightenment, particularly the awareness on the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and child. He encouraged nursing mothers to practice six months of exclusive breastfeeding, highlighting its long-term benefits to babies' immunity and cognitive growth.
He also commended Governor Adeleke for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of Osun citizens, especially in areas of health and child care, stating that the present administration will continue to invest in people-oriented programmes.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Budget and Development, Prof. Moroof Adeleke, highlighted the Governor's passion for human development, especially in children’s nutrition. He noted that the state is actively implementing a food and nutrition policy to ensure residents, particularly children, receive adequate nourishment.
Prof. Adeleke further outlined some achievements of the administration, including rural road construction and agricultural support for local farmers, which he said directly impact food availability and child health in the state.

In their goodwill messages, Special Adviser to the Governor on Budget, Hon. Adekola Adeniran; his counterpart from Public Enlightenment, Hon. Eniola Odeniyi, representative of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Budget, Mr. Iyanda Gbadebo; Alhaja Sadiat Oladapo; CAN representative Mrs. Modupeola Williams; and representative of the Chief Imam of Osogbo, Alhaji Hammed Arikalamu, all echoed the benefits of breastfeeding. They called on fathers to support their wives in the breastfeeding process and encouraged  Osun State government to fast-track the implementation of six-month maternity leave for nursing mothers.
Delivering a lecture at the event, Mrs. Rasheedat Popoola underscored the nutritional and protective benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, noting that it prevents malnutrition and diseases. She encouraged mothers to create adequate time for their babies, stressing that early nurturing lays a good foundation for lifelong health.
