Osun BPWD Boss Applauds JAMB for Promoting Inclusion in Recent Examination

... calls for additional support and special exam centres for persons with disabilities
The Executive Secretary of the Osun State Bureau for People with Disabilities, Rotarian, Ayobami Oyetunde, has commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for promoting inclusivity during its recently concluded examination. He noted that many candidates with disabilities were given equal opportunities to participate, thereby fostering a sense of belonging.

Oyetunde made the remarks during a courtesy visit to the JAMB Coordinator’s office in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. He described JAMB’s efforts as a welcome development that would enhance access to higher education for persons with disabilities.

He also highlighted the significance of a new law recently passed by the Osun State House of Assembly, which places matters concerning persons with disabilities on the exclusive legislative list. According to him, this makes it mandatory for institutions like JAMB to maintain active collaboration with the government to implement the provisions of the law.

Oyetunde urged JAMB to go further by establishing special examination centres tailored for candidates with disabilities to ensure convenience and accessibility. He also recommended the recruitment of supervisors proficient in sign language to assist hearing-impaired candidates during exams.

Additionally, he appealed to the board overseeing admissions into universities and other tertiary institutions to consider lowering cut-off marks for candidates with disabilities, thereby increasing their chances of gaining admission.

In response, the State Coordinator of JAMB, Babatunde Jacob, affirmed the Board’s commitment to inclusive education. He emphasized that all stakeholders must work together to provide a conducive environment for physically challenged individuals.

He outlined JAMB’s initiatives to support such candidates, which include the establishment of specialized examination centres in Ado-Ekiti, Bauchi, Lagos, Ibadan, and other locations. These centres are fully funded by JAMB, including the provision of tutors, accommodation, and feeding throughout the examination period.

He assured that JAMB remains dedicated to ensuring equal access to education for all Nigerians, including persons with disabilities, and will continue to improve its support systems to make education more inclusive.
