NEMA, OSEMA Conduct Assessment and Verification Exercise in Ilaa-Ijesa
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA), has carried out an assessment and verification exercise in Ilaa Ijesa to evaluate the impact of a recent windstorm that struck Atakunmosa West Local Government Area.
Leading the delegation, NEMA’s Assistant Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Olarewaju Kazeem, expressed sympathy to His Royal Majesty, Oba David Ojarotade, and the residents of Ilaa Ijesa over the unfortunate incident. He stressed the need for preventive measures against climate change, such as tree planting and reducing unnecessary deforestation, to help mitigate future windstorm disasters.
Mr. Olanrewaju further recommended that the community engage with the state governor to discuss the establishment of a Local Emergency Management Agency, which would enable faster response to local disasters.
Representing the Special Adviser to the Governor on Emergency Management, Hon. Emiola Fakeye, the Director of Operations, Mrs. Omolara Isola, acknowledged the loss caused by the rainstorm and assured them that their concerns would be relayed to the state government through OSEMA.
In response, Oba David Ojarotade appealed to NEMA and Governor Ademola Adeleke for urgent assistance. He highlighted the devastating impact on the community’s primary occupation—farming—stating that the windstorm had destroyed cash crops, damaged roofs, and left many residents without shelter or means of livelihood.
The assessment team confirmed extensive damage to farmland—affecting cocoa trees, plantains, and mango trees—as well as significant destruction to buildings, including a school and several garages.
