2025 World NTD Day: Osun is progressing in eliminating NTDs, says Akintola

The Osun State Commissioner for Health, Barr. Jola Akintola has said, Osun is making progress in its quest to completely eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases in the State.
The Commissioner stated this at the commemoration of the year 2025 World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, NTDs, held at the conference hall of the Ministry of Health, State Secretariat, Osogbo, the State Capital.
At the event which was jointly organised by the State Government and AMEN Health Care Foundation, Barr. Akintola noted that the present administration under the leadership of Senator Ademola Adeleke is living no stone unturned in getting rid of the diseases in the State, hence the regular conduct of mass administration of medicine in all the endemic Local Government Areas of Osun in line with Federal Ministry of Health elimination programme.
He added that, Osun State has made tremendous progress towards the World Health Organisation's deadline for the elimination of NTDs by 2030, saying twenty-seven local government areas endemic for Lymphatic filariasis have passed various stages of assessment, fifteen LGAs Passed Transmission Assessment Survey 1, while the remaining twelve LGAs passed pre-Transmission Assessment Survey conducted by the Federal Ministry of Health in 2024.
The State Health Ministry boss who spoke on the theme for this year, " Unite, Act, Eliminate NTDs" equally noted that since the year 2021, about four thousand people have benefited from free eye screening and more than two thousand, six hundred and five free eye glasses have been distributed in ten Local Government Areas with the support of the partners, Amen Health Care and Empowerment Foundation to ensure good vision and prevent eye blindness.
Barr. Akintola further listed some of the efforts embark upon by the state government to eliminate NTDs which included; implementation of hygiene promotion activities in 75 Communities across five local Government Areas of Boluwaduro, Ejigbo, Ifelodun, Ede South and Ifedayo. He emphasized that, Odo-Otin LG is in the process of achieving Open Defecation Free status with the support of UNICEF.
However, the Commissioner called for unity of action from the stakeholders to jointly eliminate NTDs in Osun and the Country at large.
In their separate goodwill messages, the Programme Officer, NTDs Zonal Office, Mrs Olaloye Tomilola, World Health Organisation's representative, Dr Fatoki Basiru, representative of Amen Health Care Foundation, Emmanuel Mariere, commended the state government, donors and partners for their support towards elimination of NTDs in Osun.
While seeking for more financial support from the state government for the project, the trio enjoined all and sundry to intensify efforts to jointly eliminate the diseases in the State.
Earlier in his address of welcome, the Director, Public Health, Dr Akeem Bello who spoke on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Isiaka Adekunle commended the present administration under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke for his commitment to eradication of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) in Osun.
