Project 10 million: Osun First Lady, Mrs Titilola Adeleke urges people to embark on regular medical check up

Osun State first lady, Chief (Mrs) Titilola Adeleke has urged residents of Osun to continually check their health status, especially on hypertension and diabetes so as to remained healthy and avoid untimely death.

Mrs Adeleke gave the advice during the Flagg -off ceremony of the "Project 10 Million", the initiative led by the 36 Health Commissioners and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, targeting the screening of ten million people across the Country both on hypertension and diabetes, held at local Government Service Commission Hall, State Secretariat Complex, Osogbo.

She noted that the project is a critical health initiative aimed at addressing the growing impact of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) particularly hypertension and diabetes, saying the diseases are serious threat to the well-being of the communities, contributing to 27% of all annual deaths in Nigeria. She further explained that 17% of Nigerians between the ages of 30 and 70 years are likely to die from the diseases, hence, the need for urgent move to stop it in the society.
She spoke further, "Today, I am pleased to announce the “KNOW YOUR NUMBER, CONTROL YOUR NUMBER” campaign, an initiative led by Health Commissioners from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory and approved by the Nigeria Governors Forum. 

"This campaign is set to run from October 28th to November 3rd, 2024, will check 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes. This is a great move in our collective effort to combat these diseases across the nation.

"I urge you all to take advantage of this great opportunity to be examined for hypertension and diabetes. By knowing your number, you are making a good move to guide your health. Together, we can make difference and create a better  future for all", she concluded.
Address the newsmen, the Commissioner for Health, Barr. Jola Akintola encouraged all citizens, especially people from 18 years and above to visit any public healthcare facilities as well as designated outreach sites to get screened.

The political head of the Ministry however, highlighted some of the objectives of the project which include but not limited to screening of 10 million people during a week long campaign; immediate counseling, treatment and or referrals of those found to have sub-optimal results; treatment of linkage; awareness building; data collection and policy planning among others.

In their separate goodwill messages, the National Coordinator, primary health, Dr. Tope Fadele;  representative of World Health Organisation, Dr. Fatoki noted that hypertension and diabetes are a silent killer  which threatens people's lives; explaining that the programme aims at providing accessible healthcare to every communities.

They advised those of 18 years and above to cultivate the habit of regular medical check up.

Earlier, in his address of welcome, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Isiaka Adekunle said the programme aimed at screening of non. Communicable diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes so as to screen 10 milloin people across the Country.

He thanked all the partners and healthcare workers across the Local Governments in the State for supporting the initiative.

In his vote of thanks, Director of Public Health, Dr. Akeem Bello appreciated Governor Ademola Adeleke for his giant stride in the health sector, just as he thanked all partners for their support for the programme.
Highlight of the programme was the symbolic screening of people.
