Osun PHCDA Sets To Immunize Children Against Measles, Others
Osun State Primary Healthcare Development Authority has concluded plans to immunize children from age zero to five years against the rampaging measles and other childhood diseases across the State.
The State Health Promotion Officer, Mrs Adeniji Taiwo while welcoming the stakeholders to the Planning and Sensitization Meeting on Measles and Other Childhood Diseases, held in Osogbo, says the purpose of the meeting was to prepare and strategize towards the commencement of the immunization in the State.
She disclosed that immunization of children begins at the age of zero to five years, stressing that the implementation of the current round of immunization will take place between 12th and 18th October, 2024.
Speaking further, Mrs Adeniji explained that the vaccines are of two categories; the Oral Polio Vaccines, OPV which are administered from house to house and the injectable type which are health facility base, adding that the health workers and the vaccines will be readily available in all the 814 health facilities in the State throughout the period.
She said the rule demands that Healthworkers must wait for 15 minutes after vaccine administration in case of possible Adverse Effects Following Immunization, AEFIA.
She urged schools, religious centers including various communities to assist in raising awareness and release their children for the immunization.
UNICEF representative, Fatimah Kuranga emphasized the effectiveness of schools in capturing eligible children and urged the stakeholders, especially those living around the non compliant areas to seriously raise the awareness for maximum success to be recorded.
State Cold Chain Officer, Ogundare Olumide, buttressed the importance of the vaccine, laid emphasis on the need for parents to take their wards to the facility or post nearest to them, stressing that the stakeholders should try and convince non compliant parents that the vaccines are effective, well preserved, safe and free.
The State Assistant Health Promotion Officer, Moshood Alabi revealed that measles is a highly contagious disease that needs aggressive attack, adding that the children who missed earlier integrated vaccines will also be captured during the exercise.
A Muslim community member, Ibrahim Ayilara who responded on behalf of other invited stakeholders, promised that they would put in their best to ensure that the sensitization reaches the nooks and crannies of the State.
Present at the meeting were education stakeholders from schools and ministry of education, representatives of religious bodies, community leaders among others.
