Osun Govt warns CBN, AGF against paying Osun LG funds into private accounts

The Osun State Government has issued a strong warning to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) over an alleged plot to divert local government allocations into private accounts.

In a statement released by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barr. Dosu Babatunde, the state government accused the two federal institutions of conspiring to undermine ongoing legal proceedings at the Supreme Court by making unconstitutional disbursements.

According to Babatunde, intelligence available to the state suggests that the CBN and AGF have finalized plans to transfer local government funds to individuals falsely claiming to represent the LG administrations. He described the move as a flagrant violation of public finance regulations.

"This development is deeply troubling and unconstitutional. No government agency has the right to channel public funds into private accounts," the commissioner stated.

He noted that, in a proactive move, the state’s Auditor General for Local Governments had earlier written to the CBN, formally introducing the recognized accounting officers for all 30 local governments in the state. These officers include the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLAs) and Directors of Finance.

However, the CBN Osogbo branch reportedly rejected the list and is suspected of intending to pay funds to individuals linked to the administration of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, individuals who allegedly submitted names without input from legitimate Local Government officials.

The Osun State Government has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene urgently, asserting that the plan is likely being carried out without his knowledge or that of the Minister of Finance.

"We emphasize that any funds paid into private accounts will not be recognized as Osun State Local Government funds," Babatunde warned. "Such actions will be met with the full force of the law."

The government concluded its statement by urging the federal authorities to uphold the rule of law and prevent what it termed an unconstitutional attempt to tamper with public funds meant for the people of Osun State.
